“Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy; it is democracy” - Walter Cronkite On the auspicious occasion of the 31st World Press Freedom Day, the Centre for Criminal Law & Policy (CCLP), Faculty of Law, SRMUH, hosted a captivating Inter-Department Debate Competition. The event aimed to celebrate the essence of press freedom while fostering insightful discussions on pertinent issues. The competition, held in Room No. 509 of the new building faculty of law on May 3, 2024, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, witnessed enthusiastic participation from various departments. Under the discerning eye of Judge Dr. Rajeev Ranjan, the participants engaged in thought-provoking debates on topics ranging from the role of media in driving sustainable solutions to the significance of investigative journalism and environmental advocacy.

The event commenced with a compelling speech by Manas Kejriwal from the Criminal Law Center, underscoring the importance of World Press Freedom Day and the pivotal role of the press in shaping societal narratives. Anchored with finesse by Riya, the competition saw Mansi gracefully calling upon each participant, adding a touch of professionalism to the proceedings.

Three compelling topics framed the discourse, ranging from the media's role in driving sustainable solutions to the emergence of environmental journalism in the digital age. The participants, each armed with fervor and eloquence, articulated their perspectives with conviction. Noteworthy mentions include:-

  2. Prabhav Vishwas Sharma,
  3. Sujal,
  4. Navvya Chaudhary,
  5. Yunus Syed,
  6. Kavaya Dawar

who eloquently championed the motion. Conversely,

  1. Harindu Chaudhary
  2. Srishti Mukherjee

valiantly opposed, presenting a nuanced counter-narrative.

Out of the eight passionate participants, the winners emerged through their articulate arguments and persuasive rhetoric.

  1. Prabhav Vishwas Sharma secured the first position with his compelling advocacy for investigative journalism and environmental awareness.
  2. Srishti Mukherjee claimed the second position, offering a nuanced perspective against the motion.
  3. Navvya Chaudhary clinched the third position, advocating for media's role in driving sustainable solutions.

Their remarkable performances were duly recognized with exciting prizes and heartfelt appreciation. Mrs. Kanika, the faculty convener of the center, honored Dr. Rajeev Ranjan with a certificate of appreciation for his invaluable contribution as the judge. Additionally, participants and winners alike were bestowed with e-certificates of participation and handmade postcards, symbolizing gratitude and recognition for their contributions towards fostering meaningful dialogue and promoting press freedom.

The Inter-Department Debate Competition served as a testament to the enduring power of discourse and the pivotal role of academia in nurturing informed citizenship. It underscored the importance of media in shaping societal consciousness and advocating for a sustainable future. As the curtains drew to a close on this enriching event, participants departed with newfound insights and a renewed commitment to upholding the principles of press freedom and environmental stewardship.
