The Faculty of Law organized a National Webinar on the topic ‘Revisiting the Basic Structure Doctrine’ on 31st January, 2023 at 11 AM. The chief guest for the Webinar was Justice Rajive Bhalla (Retd.), Former Judge Punjab and Haryana High Court. The event commenced at sharp 11 AM with salutations to the Chief Guest Honourable Justice (Retd.) Rajive Bhalla, Retired Judge Punjab and Haryana High Court, Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh Dean Faculty of Law, SRM University, Delhi NCR, Dr. Sandeep Kulshreshtha, HOD, Faculty of Law, SRM University, Delhi NCR, Faculty Members and all other participants.

Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh, Dean Faculty of Law welcomed the Honourable Chief guest and all other participants of the webinar. He highlighted the relevance and importance of the Basic Structure Doctrine and the debate surrounding it. The student coordinator of the event, Mr. Raj Sharma, Student of LL.B. (Hons.), gave an introduction of the basic structure doctrine and relevance of the doctrine to the Indian society. The event was proceeded by a delightful poem presented by Mr. Amar Gaur, Student of B.A. LL.B., describing the aspirations of the Indian society and nation and the ideals which the founding fathers of the constituent assembly sought to achieve.

The keynote Speaker, Honourable Chief Guest Justice (Retd.) Rajive Bhalla, addressed the webinar and explained that the doctrine emerged as the bulwark for the supremacy of the constitution and independence of the judiciary. He also stressed upon the nature of the debate with respect to the doctrine, while highlighting the issue of appointment of judges of Supreme Court and High Courts. In the last, he concluded that the ongoing debate should not be witnessed from political aspects but relevance of the doctrine in building up the society based on equality, liberty and fraternity. The event was completed with concluding remarks and vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Sandeep Kulshreshtha, HOD, Faculty of Law and provided his valuable insights on the topic.
